Chapter Thirteen

I scoffed the remainder of my breakfast while idling in the Mustang out the front of B-Co, waiting for Tim to join me. How dare Harcourt threaten Arnold? How dare James stand by and do nothing? How dare this storeowner lie and say my brother had held up his store when he’d (probably) done nothing of the sort? I’d never been so furious in my life, which, for someone who’s undergone extensive therapy for anger management issues, is really saying something.

Tim joined me in the car and I sped off the second his belt was buckled. I’d already looked up the location of the robbery – five blocks from the warehouse site, two from where Kayla was killed. We parked as close as we could and then walked to the shop. Just before we entered, Tim pulled me aside.

“Honey, I understand what you’re going through right now – well, kinda,” he said. “But you cannot go in there and beat information outta him or anything. You know that, right? You can’t touch him, and he starts making you angry, you gotta go for a walk and take deep breaths. This guy’s a good lead, but if he’s lying, he’s gonna be real touchy. Now, we don’t wanna fuck this up. We do not want to make things worse for your brother. We’ve gotta play this smart.”

I took a deep breath and nodded reluctantly. Beating information out of him just seemed like a much more straight-forward way to do business if you asked me. In hindsight, it was probably a good thing I’d brought Tim with me.

We waltzed into the small shop, pretending to look at items on the shelves as we scoped the place out. After we’d taken in the layout of the shop, Tim and I made eye contact and he nodded at me. We made our way to the counter. The guy working there was short – shorter than me – and slimy looking. He was bald and his head was so shiny I had to squint against the light glinting off it.

“You Moe?” Tim asked.

The man crossed his arms. “Who’s asking?”

“A customer,” said Tim.

“What’s it to you who I am?”

“We wanted to ask you about the robbery.”

Moe frowned. “You’re not cops.”

“We’re not.”

“Then I don’t have to talk to you,” Moe said.

“You don’t have to, but we’d appreciate it if you would,” said Tim.

Moe shook his head. “You’re not here to buy, you can leave.”

I was starting to get annoyed.

“Fine,” I said. “We’ll have this packet of chips, and some answers, please.”

“You paying card? Because we have a minimum if you’re paying card.”

“Fine. Two packets – three packets of chips.”

“Not enough.”

I groaned and rolled my eyes at the man. “Fine. Toss in this.” I picked up a packet of gum from a stand to my right and threw it in the pile. The man shook his head. I added another packet of gum. He shook his head again. I grabbed the entire display of ribbed for her pleasure fluorescent-coloured condoms sitting on the counter and tipped them onto the pile.
